Car Key Replacement: Dealership vs. Locksmith, With Real Numbers

Lose your only car key and you'll discover a fun fact: the dealership wants you to tow the car to them to make a key for it. Chew on that logic for a second — the thing that's supposed to move the car has to be transported to the key.

Here's the actual comparison, because we do this all day and the dealers' service departments are two miles from some of our regular routes.

The dealership route

• Tow the car in (you're paying for that — $100–$200 around Houston depending on distance)
• Order the key — many dealers don't stock blanks for every model year; two to five business days is common
• Pay dealer rates — $250–$600+ for a smart key, programming included
• Get the car back — total elapsed time: often most of a week

The dealership does one thing genuinely better: brand-new models, first year or two of production, occasionally have keys nobody else can program yet because the tooling hasn't been released to the trade. If you drive this year's model, call the dealer first, honestly.

The mobile locksmith route

• We come to the car — wherever it died: your driveway in Friendswood, a parking garage downtown, the Kemah boardwalk lot
• Key cut and programmed on-site — the machine is in the truck. Most jobs run 30–60 minutes start to finish
• Typical Houston pricing: basic transponder key $120–$200; remote-head keys and fobs $150–$300; proximity smart keys $200–$400. European luxury badges run higher — the blank alone can cost what a Toyota key costs installed
• Total elapsed time: usually the same afternoon you called

Making a copy when you still have one working key is quick — the car already trusts a key, and adding another is a short handshake.

Making a key when every key is gone is a different job: we're getting the car's immobilizer to accept a stranger. Different tools, more time, sometimes pulling codes by VIN with proof of ownership. Expect the higher end of every range above. It's also the situation where the dealership quote gets truly painful, so it's exactly when calling us first saves the most.

(Proof of ownership is non-negotiable for all-keys-lost, by the way. Registration or title plus ID. A key maker who doesn't ask is a key maker who'd cut one for anybody — think about what that means.)
